Midjourney Review 2026 — Is It Still the Best AI Image Generator?

I use Midjourney daily for client creative work — social graphics, brand imagery, presentation visuals. Here is an honest assessment of v7: what it does better than any competitor, and where gaps remain.

June 2026 update

Midjourney released v7 in early 2026. This version delivers a significant photorealism jump — skin textures, lighting, and shadow detail are markedly better than v6.1. Text rendering on short strings is now reliable. Pricing is unchanged. If you subscribed in 2025, you have access to v7 at no additional cost. All comparisons and screenshots in this review have been updated to reflect v7 outputs.

TL;DR — My Verdict

  • Best for: Designers and marketers who need beautiful, stylistically consistent imagery — brand visuals, social content, concept art, presentations.
  • Image quality: Still the best-looking AI image tool on the market for artistic and editorial work.
  • Not for: Precise prompt-following (DALL-E 3 is better), text-in-image (still unreliable), or free users (no free tier).
  • Bottom line: $10/month Basic plan is the best value creative tool I pay for. Worth it on image quality alone.

What is Midjourney?

Midjourney is an AI image generation tool that creates images from text descriptions (prompts). You describe what you want — "editorial photo of a woman reading in a sunlit café, film grain, 35mm" — and Midjourney generates four image options, which you can upscale, vary, or remix.

Originally built as a Discord bot (and still accessible that way), Midjourney now has a full web app at midjourney.com with an image editor, style training, and a community feed where you can browse and remix other users' generations.

What sets it apart is not the technology alone — it is the aesthetic. The team behind Midjourney has trained it with an explicit design sensibility that produces images with strong composition, colour grading, and stylistic coherence that other AI image tools frequently miss.

v7 — what changed

Midjourney v7 (released early 2026) represents the largest quality jump since V6. The key improvements over V6.1:

  • Photorealism — skin texture, fabric, and subsurface lighting are dramatically better. V7 blurs the line between AI-generated and photography on portraits and product shots. This is the most visible change.
  • Text rendering — short-to-medium strings (up to 5–6 words) now render reliably on signs, labels, and overlays. Longer text is still unreliable, but this closes a major gap that existed through V6.1.
  • Prompt fidelity — V7 follows compositional instructions more precisely. Specifying "subject on left, negative space on right" now holds in most generations. Not DALL-E-level precision, but meaningfully improved.
  • Speed — Fast GPU hours now produce results in 15–20 seconds for standard aspect ratios, down from 30 seconds in V6.1.

The web app editor introduced a Consistent Character feature in V7 — generate a character once, then use it across multiple different scenes and poses while maintaining facial consistency. A game-changer for brand mascots, book illustration, and social series.

What Midjourney does well

Aesthetic quality and artistic coherence

No other AI image tool produces images that look as considered and finished as Midjourney. Compositions are strong. Lighting is intentional. Colour relationships make sense. This is not accidental — Midjourney's team has a fine arts and design background, and it shows in how the model handles style.

Style consistency across a series

Using the Style Reference feature, you can generate dozens of images that look like they came from the same shoot or illustration series. For brand content, social campaigns, or book illustration, this consistency is essential and Midjourney delivers it better than alternatives.

Speed

Fast GPU hours mean generations in under 30 seconds. Relaxed mode (available on Standard and above) is slower but still produces results in under 2 minutes for most prompts. For volume work, the speed is practical.

Community and prompt learning

The community feed is one of Midjourney's underrated features. Browse what others are generating, see their prompts, and remix directly. This makes learning the tool dramatically faster than with isolated interfaces. You pick up effective prompt patterns from watching what works.

Where Midjourney falls short

No free tier

Midjourney ended its free trial in 2024. You must commit to at least $10/month before generating a single image. For someone who just wants to experiment, this is a genuine barrier — tools like Adobe Firefly and Microsoft Image Creator (DALL-E) offer free tiers that let you test before spending.

Prompt precision is not its strength

If you need an image with very specific compositional elements — "person on left side, table on right, red chair in background" — DALL-E 3 follows those instructions more reliably. Midjourney interprets prompts more artistically, which is great when you want a beautiful image but frustrating when you need exact layout control.

Text in images is still unreliable for longer strings

Short words on signs or labels: mostly fine now. Full sentences, website copy, or any text that needs to be exact: still broken. Do not use Midjourney as your layout tool for image-with-text; take the Midjourney image into Canva or Photoshop for text overlays.

Midjourney pricing (2026)

Plan Monthly price Fast GPU hours Relaxed mode?
Basic $10/month 3.3 hours (~200 images) No
Standard $30/month 15 hours Yes (unlimited)
Pro $60/month 30 hours + Stealth Yes (unlimited)
Mega $120/month 60 hours Yes (unlimited)

Annual billing gives 20% off across all plans. The Basic plan is right for most individual creators — 200 images per month is more than enough for regular social content. Step up to Standard if you are doing client work at volume or want the relaxed queue for overnight batch generation.

Stealth mode (Pro+) keeps your images private and not shown in the community feed — necessary for commercial client work where you do not want in-progress concepts publicly visible.

Who should actually use Midjourney

Good fit

  • Designers producing social, editorial, or brand imagery
  • Marketers needing original visuals without stock photo licenses
  • Content creators building visual identity for newsletters or social channels
  • Agencies concepting creative directions before a shoot
  • Course creators needing chapter illustrations or slide imagery

Not a good fit

  • Anyone who needs precise layout control over exact image composition
  • Anyone who needs legible, accurate text rendered inside images
  • Absolute beginners who want to try AI image tools for free first

Frequently asked questions

Is Midjourney worth it in 2026?

Yes, for designers and creators who need high-quality original imagery. The Basic plan at $10/month gives 200 generations — hard to beat on value if you use it consistently.

How much does Midjourney cost?

Basic: $10/month (~200 images). Standard: $30/month (unlimited relaxed). Pro: $60/month (stealth mode + 30 fast GPU hours). Mega: $120/month. Annual billing is 20% cheaper. No free trial currently.

Is Midjourney better than DALL-E 3?

For artistic images and aesthetic quality, Midjourney wins. For precise prompt-following and text-in-image, DALL-E 3 is better. Most professionals use both for different purposes.

Do I still need Discord to use Midjourney?

No. The midjourney.com web app is now the primary interface with an image editor, style references, and browser. Discord still works but is no longer required.

Can I use Midjourney images commercially?

Yes, on paid plans. Paid subscribers own full commercial rights to their generations. Free tier users (when available) are limited to personal non-commercial use. Pro plan adds stealth mode for client confidentiality.

Try Midjourney

No free trial, but the Basic plan at $10/month is the lowest-risk way in. One month of testing will tell you whether your workflow justifies it.
